Minutes- A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the November 6, 2008 meeting as previously distributed.
Financial Statements- Neal McGrath summarized the financial statements for the 12 months ended December 31, 2008 (attached). He reported that the Club treasury had a balance of $2,281 at the end of December.
Memorial Service- Bob LaBrec one of our long time and very active members has passed away. The Club hosted a memorial service for Bob and Bob’s family at the flying field on January the 8th. The service was well attended by Club members and Bob’s family and included a service and flag presentation by the American Legion, flying by Club members and the spreading of some of Bobs ashes using an R/C plane. Food and drinks were also provided by Club members. The family was very pleased and appreciative of our efforts. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the event particularly Jim Farley and his wife Lena who did a great job of organizing the event on very short notice.
Communication- For the last couple of years the primary method of communication with Club members has been through our web site and emails. Jim Farley pointed out that a number of our members either do not have a computer or do not check email on a regular basis. Jim suggested a number of actions to improve communication with Club members including 1) a President’s letter to supplement the monthly minutes, 2) A call committee to expedite critical and time sensitive communications and 3) the mailing of minutes and other communications that are sent via email to those Club members who do not have an email address. Rudy Kellerman volunteered to mail the minutes to members without email and Jim Farley will be contacting individuals to participate on the call committee. If you would like to volunteer please call Jim at 864-226-6470.
Annual Fly-in to Benefit Cancer Research- The LaBrec family suggested that the Club sponsor an annual event to support cancer research. There was a brief discussion of the pro’s and con’s of sponsoring such an even either alone or in conjunction with other clubs in the area. Based on that discussion there appeared to be sufficient support for an event to warrant exploring what type of event we could do and what would be involved. It would likely be a 2010 event. Bill Kirkpatrick agreed to look into what other organizations are doing and what might be involved.
Anderson University R/C Flying Course- Doug Davidson of Anderson University attended the meeting. Doug is a former member of Tri-County and indicated that he was going to offer a course on R/C flying as part of the University’s Life Long Learning Program. The class will be held on Friday afternoons from 3:00pm -4:30pm beginning February 27th. While Doug has not yet developed the course materials, course topics could include building, the pros and cons of fuel vs. electrics and flying techniques. Doug would like club members to help with some of these topics as well as instructors at the flying field on Saturdays. This could be a great way to have some fun and attract new members. If you are interested contact Jim Farley at 226-6470 or contact Doug directly at 933-1847 or email him at email@example.com .
Next Meeting- The next meeting will be held at 6:00pm on Thursday February 5th at the Anderson County Library.
